A Black Women’s History of the United States

Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross trace Black women’s experiences from the arrival of the first African women in what became the United States through the modern era. Their account brings together the lives of enslaved and free women, artists, activists, religious leaders, and queer women. It examines how these diverse experiences shaped the nation’s history.
